Baby's First Christmas Gift Ideas: Personalised Keepsakes to Treasure

A baby's first Christmas only happens once. Bub won't remember the wrapping paper or the lunch, but the photos, the stories and the gifts that last will be part of the family for years. That's why so many parents, grandparents and friends look for something a little more meaningful than another toy that's outgrown by Easter.

This guide gathers our favourite first Christmas gift ideas for Aussie families, sorted by budget, with a few practical tips on ordering personalised gifts in time for the big day.

Why a keepsake makes the best first Christmas gift

Babies receive a lot at Christmas, and most of it is used for a few months and passed on. A keepsake gift works differently. It's something the family holds on to, brings out for photos, and one day hands back to the child with a story attached.

A few things make a first Christmas gift stand out:

  • It lasts beyond the season. A named blanket or soft toy is used all year round, not just in December.
  • It's personal. An embroidered name turns a lovely gift into their gift, and it's the detail families remember.
  • It suits an Australian Christmas. Our Christmas falls in summer, so breathable cotton blankets and bath or beach towels are far more useful than heavy winter knits.
  • It's ready to give. Parents of a new baby are busy. A gift that arrives beautifully presented takes one more job off the list.

First Christmas gift ideas under $100

1. A personalised baby blanket (from $59)

If you only give one thing, make it this. A soft cotton blanket embroidered with bub's name is the kind of gift that turns up in every Christmas photo for years. Choose from cream, latte, sage, pink or baby blue to suit the nursery. Shop personalised baby blankets

2. A personalised bunny or teddy (from $39.95)

A named soft toy often becomes a baby's first real friend. Our Jamie Kay bunnies and teddies are soft, gentle and sized just right for little hands. Shop personalised soft toys

3. A personalised hooded towel (from $38.95)

It's the most practical gift on this list for an Aussie summer Christmas. Between bath time, paddling pools and the first trip to the beach, a named hooded towel gets used every single day. Shop baby towels

4. An organic cotton onesie (from $26.50)

A fun, breathable onesie is perfect for Christmas Day, when bub will be passed around the family (and photographed from every angle). Pair it with a soft toy to round out the gift. Shop organic baby onesies

5. A blanket and bunny together (around $99)

Pairing a named blanket with a matching bunny gives you a gift that looks like a set without the gift-set price. Choose tones that match, like latte with caramel or pink with blush.

Start a first Christmas tradition

Here's an idea we love. Take a photo of bub on their personalised blanket on Christmas morning, then repeat it every year with the same blanket. It starts as a tiny baby on a big blanket and ends up as a grinning kid sitting on top of it. It costs nothing, and it quickly becomes the photo everyone waits for.

If you're giving the blanket, tuck a little note in the box suggesting it. The parents will thank you every December.

Ordering in time for Christmas

Every Baby Age gift is personalised by hand in our Perth embroidery studio, so it pays to order early. Here's how the timing works:

  • Processing: orders are processed Monday to Friday. Orders placed after 3pm AWST are processed the next business day.
  • Dispatch: gifts usually ship within 48 hours once processing is complete.
  • Standard delivery ($9.99): 3 to 10 business days after dispatch.
  • Express delivery ($15): 2 to 5 business days after dispatch.

December is Australia Post's busiest month, and delivery times stretch the closer you get to Christmas. To beat the rush, we recommend ordering at least two weeks before Christmas, by Friday 11 December. Regional and remote areas can take longer, so order earlier if you're sending to the country.

We currently deliver within Australia only. If you're family overseas buying for a baby here, our guide to sending a baby gift to Australia from overseas walks you through it.

Baby's first Christmas FAQs

When should I order a personalised gift for Christmas?

As early as you can, and ideally at least two weeks before Christmas (by Friday 11 December) to beat the rush. Personalised gifts are made to order, so they can't be rushed out the way off-the-shelf stock can. Ordering in November takes the stress out completely.

Is a personalised gift worth it if the baby won't remember Christmas?

That's exactly why it's worth it. Bub won't remember the day, but a named blanket or soft toy becomes the thing that connects them to it, through photos and the stories told about it later.

What should I give if the baby is due in December?

A gift set or hamper makes a lovely present for the parents-to-be before the birth. If you'd like the gift personalised, you can wait until bub arrives and the name is announced, then order a named blanket or bunny as a first Christmas gift.

What if there are older siblings?

A small named gift for an older brother or sister, like a soft toy or towel, helps them feel included in the excitement. It's a thoughtful touch parents always notice.

A first Christmas to remember

The best first Christmas gifts don't need to be big. They just need to be chosen with care and made to last. Whether it's a single named blanket or a full gift set, a personalised keepsake gives the family something to hold on to long after the tree comes down.
